Running on a Treadmill May Not Duplicate Running on Ground

Abstract:

Treadmills are often used in research projects to simulate overground locomotion, assuming that locomotion is similar on a treadmill and overground. The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether a treadmill could be used to simulate overground locomotion. Twenty-two subjects ran on four different surfaces: overground and three treadmills that differed in size and power. The kinematics of the right leg and foot were studied using two high-speed. Locam cameras (lateral and posterior view). The subjects ran in two different shoes at four different speeds (3.0-6.0 m-s-1). The differences in the kinematics between treadmill and overground running could be divided into systematic and subject dependent components. Subjects systematically planted their feet in a flatter position on the treadmill than overground. Most of the lower extremity kinematic variables, however, showed inconsistent trends for individual subjects, depending on the individual subject’s running style, running speed, and shoe/treadmill situation. The differences were substantial. It is not-yet understood how the human locomotor system adapts to a particular treadmill running situation. However, it is concluded that individual assessment of running kinematics on a treadmill for shoe or shoe orthotic assessment may possibly lead to inadequate conclusions about overground running.

If more than one person will use the treadmill regularly then plan for the heaviest user and the most demanding use. A walking program can provide all the cardiovascular benefits of jogging so if the goal is to just stay in shape then a motorized treadmill with a top speed of 6 MPH or so would suit you fine. Walkers should also consider a manual treadmill. Serious runners want a top speed of 10-12 MPH and a belt area with a stride length that accommodates their natural running gait. If that’s important then measure your runner’s stride and match it against the treadmill manufacturer’s specifications. Read more treadmill buying info...

Beyond the Pill Bottle: Alternative Arthritis Therapies

Filed under: Treadmills — admin @ 8:19 am

Opening a pill bottle brings the promise of relief from pain for many people. But for 41 percent of the 46 million Americans diagnosed with arthritis, everyday activities – like opening their arthritis medication – can be very difficult. Is it any wonder, then, that millions seek alternative ways to enhance their doctor-prescribed drug treatment?

Nearly a quarter of all adult Americans have doctor-diagnosed arthritis, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. The Centers for Disease Control report that up to 25 percent of osteoarthritis patients can’t perform major daily activities.

Fingers and hands are particularly susceptible to pain and inflammation that can cause difficulty in gripping, pinching and grasping – motions needed to perform simple, everyday tasks. Non-medicinal treatments – from supplements to specially designed gloves – can help improve pain relief and quality of life for many arthritis sufferers.

“Evaluate all alternative treatments with a critical eye and follow the advice of your doctor,” cautions Aurelia Koby, president of IMAK, producers of aids for treating joint and muscle pain. “Not all alternative treatments are as effective as others.”

Consumers can make intelligent choices about alternative arthritis treatments with a few facts at their fingertips:

Use It or Lose It

“Mild to moderate exercise is an important part of most arthritis treatment plans,” Koby says. “Exercise can help improve flexibility and reduce pain in the long term. For arthritis sufferers, it truly is a case of ‘use it or lose it.’ ”

Exercise can help keep joints moving, strengthen muscles connected to joints, preserve bone health, control weight that greatly impacts arthritis pain, and improve your overall health and fitness, according to www.Arthritis.org, the Web site of the not-for-profit Arthritis Foundation.

Be sure your doctor or physical therapist reviews and advises you on any exercise plan before you start one. Eastern exercise traditions such as yoga and tai chi, which emphasize flexibility and offer low-impact workouts, can help arthritis sufferers, many experts believe.

Real Alternative Treatments

Massage is an age-old treatment that has proven therapeutic for a wide range of ailments, including arthritis. Both self- and professional massage can work well. If you choose to have a professional massage, make sure the therapist is experienced in working with arthritis patients.

Acupuncture and acupressure have become widely accepted pain-relief therapies. The World Health Organization views acupuncture as a valid, useful treatment for a number of ailments, including chronic pain. As always, consult your physician when considering acupuncture as a treatment. Be sure the therapist you choose has experience working with arthritis patients.

Supports and aids that apply pressure can be helpful in alleviating arthritis pain and swelling. Arthritis Gloves, by IMAK, use mild compression to provide pain relief, decrease joint swelling, generate warmth, and improve circulation. The Arthritis Gloves, designed by an orthopedic surgeon, are made to be worn during daily activities. Made of cotton Lycra, the gloves have open fingertips to maximize the pressure to your fingers while allowing freedom to touch, feel and grip. According to Kokkinos, most middle-age and older individuals can attain fitness levels with a brisk walk, 30 minutes per day, five to six days each week. “I do not advocate that everyone can start with 30 minutes of physical activity. In fact, 30 minutes may be too much for some people. If this is the case, split the routine into 10-15 minutes in the morning and another 10-15 minutes in the evening. The benefits will be similar if the exercise volume accumulated is similar,” he said. Full article.

Treadmills allow you to determine the pace, distance, and complexity of the workout based on your needs, all while watching television, talking on the telephone, or reading a magazine. Much easier on sensitive joints like the knees and hips, treadmill walking and running surfaces are typically long, padded platforms that allow ample room for a long stride and comfortable, low-impact walk or jog without the harsh contact of a concrete surface.

While many different types, styles, and price ranges of treadmills exist, many of them offer unique features like a fold-up design for easy storage, an electronic display monitor showing speed, distance, workout time, incline level, and burned calories, and EKG grip pulses to monitor the heart rate while exercising. Regardless of the simple to complex features you may choose, treadmills offer an array of aerobic exercise opportunities that will provide long-lasting beneficial cardiovascular results without a commute to the gym or a jog in the rain.

The Bowflex 7 series treadmill is a high quality treadmill that is very easy to set up. In fact, one of the treadmills strength is its ease of construction. You don’t need any experience whatsoever in setting up treadmills; just follow the step by step instructions, and you will be working out in no time.

The overall design is very sturdy, and is built to last. The treadmill also comes with a cushioned deck, which is very important to reduce the jarring to the knees and back.

Also, it is very easy to flood up or down; simply pull it up and lock it in the upright position. Once locked, all you have to do is press the handle to release it back down. The handle is 62″ inches above the ground, so you needn’t to worry about your child accidentally pressing it.

The only slight drawback to the treadmill is that it doesn’t come with a book-holder, which is a nice option if you want to read while working out. Again, this is a minor drawback, but something to keep in mind if you are an avid reader.

Many different retailers carry the bowflex; check the stores in your local area. The national chain Dicks Sporting Goods carries it as well. Be careful when deciding where to purchase these machines, however.

Some of the retailers who market them tend to be very lackadaisical about delivering them on time. As long as you stay with a larger and trusted retailer, you should be fine.

The bottom line is, whether you are just starting out or an avid workout nut, the bowflex 7 series treadmill is the right choice for you. It comes at an affordable price and at a quality level virtually unmatched by its competition.

Obesity is one of the risk factors in many serious diseases like diabetes, heart ailment or gastro-related illnesses. Man’s present lifestyle has made it almost impossible to avoid fatty foods. A closer look at the most-sought after restaurants for busy people includes diners that offer quickie but fat-filled meals.

Added to the proliferation of tempting food outlets is the busy schedules of people who barely have enough time to meet their family, much more to exercise. There are those who make an effort to lose a few pounds but are hampered by their busy schedules.

LifeSpan 100% Silicone Treadmill Belt Lubricant

List Price: $19.99
Buy New: $16.99
You Save: $3.00 (15%)

Features:
• 100% pure silicone with no odor, no propellants and no distillates
• 4 oz bottle with universal pump sprayer
• 4 applications per bottle for a (1) year supply
• Prevents costly repairs by reducing friction between the running belt and deck

One strategy to keep up with a regular exercise despite one’s busy schedule is to buy exercise machines that can be used for a few minutes during one’s free time, anywhere. If you have a busy schedule, what you need is a machine that you can keep in the office or in the house, and which can be easily stored in a small space.

One of the most practical exercise machines is the treadmill. It may cost more than the other exercise machines but it has proven effective to most people who look at exercise with disdain.

Most people dread the times when they have to use their exercise machines because these are either too complicated or a tad difficult to operate. Using treadmills can come naturally for most people because what it requires is the basic walking and running skills, two skills that come naturally among humans.

If you have a tight budget, there are manual treadmills which operate simply by treading or walking on the rubber. For those who have more money to spare, there are electronic treadmills that measure the calories lost, miles traveled and other exercise data. No matter what treadmill you choose, you will definitely be able to recoup such investment in a short time as you will be able to stay on the machine longer than any other exercise machines.
Experts said that high-end treadmills with a motor horsepower of 1.5 or 2.5 continuous duty should be preferred. Also choose treadmills with a longer warranty period for their motor.

You can avoid getting injuries by doing some stretching first before starting out on the treadmill. Begin your treadmill exercise by walking and getting the hang of the machine. Do not try any antics as you can fall off the treadmill if you try running without getting too familiar with the machine. You may be excited when you first get hold of the machine but a 20 minute walk using the treadmill two to three times a week would be a good start. Gradually increase your speed and frequency as you get more comfortable with the machine.

Walking on the treadmill for at least 30 minutes every session will help you lose fat. However, always check with your doctor before doing any exercise routine to make sure you are not aggravating any physical illness.

Other people use their treadmills while watching television or listening to their favorite music. The secret of a successful exercise routine is not just a good exercise machine; you also have to enjoy what you are doing.

Customer Review: It’s a lubricant, and it’s made of silicone. ’nuff said.

No, but really, I can’t say I noticed a difference with the treadmill after I put it on, but being that it is a lubricant, it certainly can’t hurt the treadmill. I used about 1/3 the bottle to lube up the undertrack portion below the belt. So depending on your treadmill size, you should get around three uses out of this product before it runs out. I’d buy it again when the time comes.

Bone Density and Impact Exercises

Filed under: Fitness Equipment, Treadmills, Women's Health — admin @ 2:48 pm

High-impact sports have been linked to increased bone density in young athletes. Now, research shows that these sports are also beneficial for the bone health of older competitors.

In a study of 560 elderly athletes competing in the Senior Olympic Games, investigators discovered that athletes participating in high-impact sports showed statistically significantly greater bone mineral density than those in low-impact sports. After controlling for confounding variables, the researchers also found that high-impact sports significantly contributed to bone mineral density according to the study abstract.

“We know that persistent participation in impact sports can positively influence the bone health of both men and women, and this is true for even the oldest athletes,” Vonda J. Wright, MD, said during her presentation at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons 74th Annual Meeting. “These data imply that exercise in general, and high-impact exercise in particular, should be used as a tool for maintaining bone health while aging.”

Wright said. “… the greatest impact of exercise in healthy people can be seen in those participating in periods of intense exertion.” “We found that those people participating in higher-resistance or high-impact sports had a statistically significantly higher bone density than those participating in the less high-resistance sports categories…. the bone density could be attributed to those participating in high impact sports,” Wright said.

“This is interesting in light of the fact that in 2001, we also studied these senior Olympians and found that overall, osteopenia and osteoporosis were less prevalent in senior athletes than the general population,” she said.

“Even in the most elderly women, [there was] a very high percentage of even women in their 80s having normal bone density.” That study also showed lower rates of osteoporosis in women who competed in weight-bearing sports compared those participating in non-weight-bearing physical activity, she said.

Refurbished treadmill

Filed under: Fitness Equipment, Treadmills — admin @ 10:33 am

A refurbished treadmill is a used commercial grade treadmill. Refurbished treadmill is basically rebuilt or remanufactured from the existing used treadmill. The used treadmill is disassembled to some degree and rebuilt into a refurbished treadmill. A Refurbished treadmill looks like a new treadmill or at least very close to a new treadmill.

Ironman Legacy Treadmill with 7″ LCD TV Screen (Factory Refurbished)

List Price: $1,499.00
Buy New: $749.00
You Save: $750.00 (50%)

This factory refurbished Ironman Legacy is the most feature-rich treadmill in its class. In addition to its technologically advanced design and wide variety of workout options, the Legacy is also outfitted with a 7-inch flatscreen LCD TV, which enables you to watch your favorite show while working out. You can also utilize the built-in stereo speakers or plug in your own headphones for personal listening. Workout features include a body fat monitoring system to keep track of your progress, signature OneTouch speed and incline buttons, convenient remote handlebar controls and an oversized 20 x 60-inch running surface.

Refurbished treadmill is built after disassembling the used treadmill, sandblasting it, replacing worn/broken parts of the treadmill and repainting the treadmill. Refurbished treadmills look and function like brand new treadmills.

Refurbished treadmill enables treadmill buyers to save thousands of dollars. Commercial grade treadmills cost high, but a refurbished treadmill can be purchased at half the price of a new treadmill. Everyone cannot afford to spend a lot of money on a treadmill. Refurbished treadmill is a pretty good way to enable these users to save money and buy a used treadmill. Refurbished treadmill is very enticing because its cheap and offers the pleasure of money saving.

Refurbished treadmills are big business. Refurbished treadmill is an alternate option to start at the lower end of the market while buying a treadmill device. Refurbished treadmill enables users to spend some time getting the feel for exercising and wait until they are happy to upgrade/buy a commercial grade treadmill. Users prefer to buy a used treadmill at a much lower price and rebuild a better refurbished treadmill machine than they would get buying new at the cheapest end of the market.

Refurbished treadmill makes sense to spend less, get some basic treadmill experience in and then upgrade to get the exact treadmill model user wants with the desired features. Refurbished treadmill enables users to get feel of the features they require in their treadmill and avoid buying expensive or branded treadmills before knowing what features they desire/want in a treadmill.

Refurbished treadmills definitely involve risks especially when users have to hunt for ordinary used treadmills. Users never know what quality of refurbished treadmill they are getting and risk factors like motor break, exact wear estimation, etc. Refurbished treadmill is usually more expensive than second hand treadmill.

Refurbished treadmill is manufactured or rebuilt from a used treadmill which is disassembled and rebuilt with worn out or broken parts been replaced. Refurbished treadmill doesnt tell/reveal users information relating who manufactured or refurbished the treadmill. Refurbished treadmill usually means newer treadmill machine which may even be only a year or two old. Refurbished treadmills do not have much wear to require serious rebuilding.

Users in hunt of refurbished treadmill should always try and look for factory refurbished treadmills since these refurbished treadmills have been refurbished by qualified technicians and have undergone rebuilding in the factory. Business which makes a living from refurbished treadmills is also another alternate option for users to buy refurbished treadmill.

Disassembling a used treadmill and rebuilding it to produce a refurbished treadmill is a specialists and technicians task and involves stringent processes. Refurbished treadmill built from the used treadmill involves numerous processes. First process of building a refurbished treadmill involves disassembling the used treadmill. Second process of building a refurbished treadmill incorporates sandblasting the frame to strip off any imperfections. The frame is then powder coated and baked. Refurbished treadmill requires rebuilding the mechanical and electrical systems with brand new parts to match the new treadmill specifications. Final processes of building a refurbished treadmill involves reassembling the treadmill, refinishing the exterior with paint, seal/finish, decals and performing triple diagnostic examination to ensure performance of the refurbished treadmill.

Users while buying a refurbished treadmill should consider the age of the treadmill, who has refurbished the treadmill and the warranty of the refurbished treadmill. Numerous refurbished treadmill brands are available in the market and users should take the precaution and consider the above points while buying refurbished treadmill. Refurbished treadmill is very different to second hand treadmill. Second hand treadmill remains in its used state, however in refurbished treadmill the treadmill is rebuilt and worn/broken parts are replaced by new ones.

Refurbished treadmill is not for everyone. Refurbished treadmill is a good solution for users who want to buy a commercial treadmill at half the price.

Joint-friendly Benefit of Elliptical Machines

Filed under: Exercise Equipment, Fitness Equipment, Treadmills — admin @ 3:10 pm

The joint-friendly benefit of elliptical machines is something like having your cake and eating it too, not quite, but more than close enough if your primary training purpose is cardio fitness and muscle endurance. A Precor elliptical cross trainer is a home elliptical every bit as good as commercial exercise equipment. All models get positive and often enthusiastic reviews, and can be used as the gold standard for feature comparison. Precor uses a quiet self-powered electro magnetic generator so there is never a wall plug to deal with. Just about all Precors do and many other elliptical machines come equipped with heart rate monitors and other sensors and simulators. A Precor will never be confused for a cheap elliptical.

Precor Elliptical EFX 546. The Precor elliptical EFX 546 is one of the most sought after and popular elliptical trainer machines available. Built upon the popularity of the EFX 544, the Precore elliptical EFX 546 is more refined in its movement.

Horizon backs it up with a 12 year warranty on the motor and a lifetime warranty on the frame. The wireless pedometer counts all your daily steps no matter how many distractions break up your routine. You always know how much exercise you have left to do to meet your daily goal.

The Horizon Fitness WT951 Wireless Pedometer Treadmill is not Horizon Fitness’ most expensive treadmill, but it is among their most popular. The WT951 has a reliable 2.25 HP incline motor that works up to 12 MPH and on a 12 percent grade. If you wanted to train for the Olympics you could do it on the WT951.

Fitness experts will tell you that the superior way to train for a particular athletic activity is to perform that activity. Treadmills can provide all the training effect of running on pavement without the downsides. The Horizon WT951 addresses the impact issue. The belt is designed with special cushioning and is divided into three impact zones to minimize joint stress while still providing the muscle strength and bone density benefit of running on pavement.

The digital console offers preset distance programs, and one touch speed and incline keys. Very importantly, the WT951 provides heart rate contacts in the grips so you can monitor your cardiovascular training effect. Unless you know the heart rate you should be training at, cardio may be a waste of time. With the right knowledge, you can easily adjust the speed and incline controls while you monitor your heart rate to get exactly the right cardiovascular training effect.

You can spend more for gym equipment than the Horizon WT951 but this baby has it all. Horizon treadmill

Only treadmill exercises that require breathing in large volumes of air will improve cardio respiratory fitness. Worthwhile aerobic activities must involve the use of large muscle groups, and must be rhythmic. They must also be of sufficient duration and intensity.

A home treadmill is ideal exercise equipment to benefit from a cardio fitness program because it satisfies the three requirements: air volume, large muscles, rhythm. Plus, a treadmill will increase bone density and build leg strength more than an elliptical. The Phoenix Easy Up Manual Treadmill is inexpensive and effective. A cheap treadmill will not have the same features as the best treadmill but it will do the job. Combine the treadmill with a Polar M61 Heart Rate Monitor and some cardio fitness knowledge into a meaningful cardio fitness treadmill exercise program.
